RTO comments on Orfeo ed Euridice

RTO: um, do they often have women play men?

MK: yeah, the conductor just mentioned that this was originally written for a castrati.

RTO: oh, I guess you don't find many of those around today.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

RTO: well, of course she's Love, she's wearing a pink sparkly shirt.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

RTO: Have we seen her (Stephanie Blythe) in something before?

MK: um

RTO:

MK: not on TV, no. she was Carmen when I was in the chorus in Tulsa.

RTO: oh. I see she's maintained her build.

MK: oh yeah.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

You can hear an excerpt and see a few pics with the NYT review, here. I remember when I listened to an album a while back, I wasn't terribly moved, but seeing it really made a difference. I really enjoyed this, the acting and dancing and chorus made a big impact.

um, maybe I will visit NY again...

in The Column today:

....Two major Hollywood box-office draws will join forces in the fall for a new
Broadway play.

The New York Post reports that Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Daniel Craig (James
Bond) will co-star in Keith Huff's A Steady Rain.

No official announcement about the production has been made; however, should it
come to pass the drama will likely be the hottest ticket of the fall season.

Barbara Broccoli, who was a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang producer, will produce the
Broadway outing.

A Steady Rain tells of two seasoned cops whose lifelong friendship is severely
tested when a seemingly routine domestic disturbance call results in the death
of a young boy. When the horrific truth of the situation is revealed, one of the
two must take the blame for the fatal mistake.

had our first beginner class last night. It was kinda strange because when we first got there the instructor told us that there were two others that had signed up, but neither of them could make it, so we wouldn't really get started til next week. Then a few minutes later some new people showed up with a little black puppy named Chloe. anyhoo, we worked on making eye contact/getting Roxie's attention. and sitting, which she kinda already knows. They're teaching us to use hand signals and a clicker rather than vocal cues.

The fun part was watching Chloe play with Roxie and nobody got eaten.

RTO comments on Thais....

RTO: They should have had her sing Salome.

MK: I don't think she's quite the right voice for that.

RTO: yeah, that's not what I'm talking about.

MK: I know. Renee's pretty.

The sound and picture isn't very good in this clip, but it gives you an idea. She's one of those that is very easy for me to watch because she makes everything look effortless. It's like she just opens her mouth and the sound falls out. I know some complain that she gets sloppy sometimes (and I've heard some really entertaining things like towards the end of this clip), but I don't think this production was one of those

another weird day

it must be something about life insurance. got up around ten thirty cause someone was supposed to be here at 11 to take blood. Anyhoo, she had some traffic trouble and got here around 11:30 instead. I felt all groggy most of the time and conked out shortly after she left and slept til 6:30.

another day of weird dreams. Mostly, I was cranky because I knew I was going to die soon from who knows what, just general boredness, I guess, and these people kept making me go places. At one point I was at a concert cause the composer was a friend of mine. (He'd been the one that made me go) But then after the concert I was talking to some lady and she mentioned the composer and I was all, "that's not the right name" and looked at the program and they'd given someone else credit for it, and my friend was all "Let's just get you out of here." so I was cranky some more in the car and then there was a party at my house and there were people there from high school whose names I couldn't tell you off the top of my head.

signs.. signs...

now that I have my cell phone with me most of the time I take pictures of things that amuse me while I'm out and about.

These showed up on every door into the theater one night. They also put signs over all the sinks and drinking fountains about washing your hands to fight spreading pig flu. The director felt the need to tell us not to take it personally. It was required for all public buildings in town.

I saw this today in an antique store. They must have a much larger bathroom than I do. plus, I doubt the humidity would be good for the comics.

hmmmmm

in case you haven't scrolled down the page much, I added a widget. I'm trying out a pedometer thing on my phone. Thing is, I didn't go for two walks yesterday. I walked tonight and I'd swear it was for more than a half-hour. and comparing tonight's manual mapping/pedometer mileage estimate there's almost a mile of difference. map says a something close to two and a half miles and the estimate according to steps is 1.6 miles. I may have goofed it up by not setting my phone to not go to sleep. eh, I'll give it a few more walks.

oops

my forearms are a little bit red. guess I'll have to remember sunscreen if I'm gonna walk the dog during the day.

update: oooooh , or maybe a parasol.

The other interesting bit of the day was that Roxie bolted out the front door as I was going to check the mail. But for once she didn't go very far (only to the corner) aaaaand, she came back pretty quickly. probably cause I was in my dog walking clothes, so she knew we'd be going out, but she needed the leash.

update 2: Other things I've noticed are pink

1. my forehead
2. the "bright colors" load of laundry. stupid new red skirt.

when the bike helmet does nothing...

was out walking Roxie at the park and heard some kid crash his bike. Once I got to where I could see him, he was crawling out from under the bleachers behind the backstop. Judging from that, I'm guessing he didn't realize the hill that the pavilion sits atop ends abruptly with a three foot drop into the "dugout" I thought he was probably okay since he was up and walking/running towards his mom. but she looked at him and went "Oh my God!" (from what I could tell, he'd hurt his right eye cause he had his hand over it) He was being taken care of, so I kept walking. bout the time we hit Kittyhawk I heard sirens and it sounded like they stopped where the park would be. poor kid. OTOH, other kids will probably think he looks cool with an eye patch.

Roxie, Rockstar!

to start at the beginning... last Saturday, I'm checking my phone between shows and there are two messages from RTO. He'd been working in the yard and accidentally left the garage door open and Roxie took off. (Wasn't sure what calling me was supposed to accomplish, he told me later he thought maybe I would know where she usually goes. um, no, she's pretty random.) Anyhoo, someone in our neighborhood saw her and picked her up because she looked confused and then they called the house. RTO picked her up shortly after that. (When I got home that night, there were four messages on the machine and they were quite entertaining. Message 1: "I have your dog", Message 2: "I hear you calling for her, I hope you check your messages soon" Message 3: "I still have Roxie" Message 4: "Roxie. She's at my house, call me")

Anyway, we were out for a walk tonight and hear this other person with a dachsund coming up behind us, so I'm trying to get Roxie out of the way and then the person says "Is that Roxie?" Ha ha, yes, it's the lady that caught her Saturday.

Then about half way through our walk, there's this group fishing and one guy sees us and asks "So, you found your dog?" I guess he'd been working out in his yard Saturday and RTO asked if he had seen her.

I'm a mess!

whatever I did last night, I hope I don't do it again anytime soon...

have been just worn out all day. slept til almost one thirty, but was having this really intense dream and was hoping I would finish it. It started out with me on some college campus and these two guys in a light blue ford truck try to run me over, but I managed to run into a building, but then they got out and shot me. and then I was all, "I'm not dead?" and this voice told me "no, this is going to happen six months from now" so I spent the rest of the dream trying to help these two detectives track the two guys down and one of them keeps showing up and killing people (even blew up a building) and getting away and I think at some point one of the detectives was killed. and there was something about corn and my name was Carla Ross and I was upset that my friend had disappeared as well.

anyhoo, my head hurt most of the day. still went out and got a new microwave, though. w007!

MK: thanks, your comment reminded me of a movie quote.

RTO: what movie has a quote about lumpy headed babies?

MK: Mr. Mom. not lumpy heads. babies and chili.

RTO:

MK: I saw that movie a few times...

RTO: so what's the quote?

MK: "Are you crazy? You don’t feed a baby chili!"

RTO: Well, I guess it's a good thing you saw that movie, so you learned that.

Black Lab, round 2

Took Roxie to the vet today for a check-up. Fortunately, there weren't any other critters in the waiting room when we got there. But as we came out of the exam room, this black lab came lumbering up to us and then everybody lunged (Roxie launched off my foot and i have a very nice scratch) BL's owner and the receptionist finally show up and BL's owner says, "Oh hey, I think I saw you at the lake this weekend" um, yeah and you're still not controlling your dog. I didn't really get a chance to say anything to him because I figured getting Roxie out of sight was more important. I don't know if it's something she does or what that sets other dogs off, but I'm hoping the training class helps.

today's randomness...

signed Roxie up for a training class at Petsmart today. after the black lab incident this weekend, I figured I should at least try to get her to behave civilly.

Carlos is currently determined to lean on my shoulder (he's half on the arm of the couch, half on my shoulder). which is strange. I think he got annoyed that I kept clicking and typing while he had his head on my arm.

speaking of clicking I spent an hour or two today looking at art by Yoriko Yoshida can't read most of the stuff on that page, so I'm not sure about what medium they're using, but they make some interesting juxtapositions. if you don't have long, check out the "tenpura" section to see what I mean.

and in case you don't do the facebook thing... here's my latest cupcake project.

RTO came up with the "finger" idea. I wanted to do something Sweeney Todd related. Anyhoo, the cupcakes were red velvet with cream cheese frosting and the fingers are sugar cookies with almond slivers and red gel icing.
