which was kinda good even though it was a bit predictable. Started The Messianic Legacy which so far, is not so convincing as Holy Blood, Holy Grail. They're relying too much on "this has been mistranslated" probably. and no mysteriously appearing sources at the library.

Also, totally unrelated, I bought some more Thorlos today so I'll have some every day instead of one day a week. Hopefully that will help my scary looking feet.

Park was still mostly under water today so we took the rain route, as I like to call it. It's not as far as walking the park, but it will do.

new pile o' books on the nightstand. Can't believe I finally cleared it out last year.

Gonna try to keep better track of what I read this year. so to start... finished a collection of H.P. Lovecraft and moved on to Denise's Daily Dozen, which I probably won't follow. Then read Freakonomics, interesting but hard to explain, mostly just a bunch of random factoids. and most recent was Black Beetles in Amber by Ambrose Bierce.

currently reading Jimbo by Algernon Blackwood. (the lovecraft collection gave me some leads on other stuff to read... this and the Bierce being a couple of them.)

added to the pile today.... Blink, The Tipping Point, What the Dog Saw, The Help, and This is Your Brain on Music.

So I guess we'll see if I keep reading this year.

and I've been joking about Albert going through his teens lately, he's not as snuggly as he used to be, mostly hides out by himself. now he has kitty acne. it's treated pretty much like people acne, with some benzoil peroxide shampoo. the fun part will be getting him to sit still for washing. Otherwise, everyone is good, unless something shows up in their bloodwork, but they all seem healthy, so I'm not expecting anything to come up.

I just watched the Met HD broadcast of Fanciulla del West and it was awesome, but I can't find any of it on youtube. which makes me sad. I should figure out how to rip things off the DVR.

anyhoo, it's the first opera I ever saw and still a favorite and I bawled at the end of it. RTO hates it cause the bad guy gets away, but he has no sense of romance or something.

still something to keep your eyes peeled for. there were some technical issues with the sound, but the acting helped overcome that.

so this morning I was awakened by my neighbor, who still had a house key, bringing Sophie in. Yesterday, I got home to two messages letting me know someone had my dog (but then not really)

I went to go get Sophie and she wasn't in the back yard so I started walking home and I spotted her about halfway down the street. Anyway, the lady that had her told me that her neighbors for familiar with Sophie because she follows them home when they walk by in the alley.

I'm thinking I should just put a tag on her that says "Please let me go, I know where I live, and they will never know I was gone"

we're gonna need a bigger fence.

so the last couple days I've been walking the dogs together cause I didn't feel like walking in the first place so who knows if the second dog would get a walk.

Anyway, passed a couple pit bulls today and Roxie managed to slip free and become a chew toy. It's hard to pull dogs apart when you've got extra dogs involved. Guy with the pits finally got Roxie pinned and his dog off so I could slip her collar back on and tighten it.

to D.C. last week. didn't really take any pictures, RTO got a few with his phone, but I figured enough pictures had been taken of all the landmarks there was no need for me to take more. I just soaked in the scenery.

Roxie looks like Frankenstein's monster. Sophie attacked her Friday, so she has some shaved bits on her head. The vet didn't seem too concerned about it when i picked them up today. one of those,"scary when it happens" things, but everyone is okay. sorta.

but otter attacks are in the news in Boca. apparently Rush Limbaugh talked about it today.

RUSH: I'm sorry, my friends, I was so absorbed in another news story here, and it's this. "The Palm Beach County health department," that's us, that's where we live, "says two more people have been bitten by an aggressive and possibly rabid otter trolling the Boca Raton area." Did you know about this? "William Gibbons was bitten by the animal as he videotaped it floating in a canal behind his home. He has received six rabies shots and is scheduled to receive four more. Two other people were bitten by an aggressive otter in the area earlier this month. Authorities are continuing to search for the animal," but they all look alike so how you gonna know which one is which when you get it? (interruption) No, it says aggressive. The otter was not confused, it was aggressive. It's the Oregon Christmas tree bomber that was confused. Now, this is gonna come as a shock to people. They see little otters and they're on their back waving at us with their paw, "Oh, how cute." Apparently the little things are jumping out of the water here to bite people. You ever know an otter to do that? Well, I haven't known any otters.

while out walking today we met a couple of dogs that weren't on leashes and nobody got hurt.

One dog, it was kinda our fault. We were down the street and she came running after us and then we watched these two little boys chase her all around the park. some kind of medium sized black dog with a couple white spots.

Then later we met a Lab. had already gone by him once while he was on a leash, but apparently his owner let him loose a bit later.

Anyway, loose dogs seem to always be soggy.

It's the first one that's going to be fun. Was taking the dogs for a walk, going out the garage door and dogs from across the alley were out. Roxie got away from me and got a hold of the bulldog (there was also a dachsund, but he was smart enough to not get within reach of my dogs). they wrestled a bit and wound up going through the doggie door and I waited a couple minutes until Roxie came out. Who knows what happened. Then Roxie took off to see the rest of the neighbors. I went ahead and took Sophie around the park and figured someone would have found Roxie by the time we got back, if she didn't find us first. Sure enough, there was a message from someone down the block. Everybody's home now.

Anyhoo, while I'm briefly on politics, we went to a candidate forum Saturday night and it was entertaining. Maybe two Dem candidates even mentioned what party they were representing on the ticket while the others were asking that people please vote for the candidate, not the party.

Libertarian candidates still run the gamut from kooky to loony.

And I really hate having to vote for judges. There were like five bajillion judicial candidates there and most of them just asked that people please vote the whole ballot. "We're down here!!!"

and so we did. well, just the tears running down your face maybe I've got something in my eye kind.

This ran on the local PBS station, oh, probably a month ago, but we just watched it tonight and Mom, if you can you really should see this.

We'd watched the movie recently and it was terrible so I debated whether or not I should record it, but I'm glad I did.

I got a bit teary at the end of the first act and told RTO, "I actually care about these people" the movie ones just annoyed me, and I didn't feel like some of their actions made any sense, or were so poorly acted that i just couldn't believe it.

Other funny note, "Happy Talk" started and RTO was all, "this wasn't in the movie" uh, yeah it was and it seemed to go on for.ev.ar. probably why he didn't remember it, but in the show it's in a completely different context and is a bit disturbing... I don't think that's the right word, but it has a much darker tone.

Like I said, I'm really glad we saw this, it totally redeemed the show for me.

in case you were wondering, I'm doing pretty good this last week. Didn't realize how much I was putting up with for so long. I can wake up before 10 and not feel sluggish all day. I've gone to work three days in a row for two whole weeks now. (I was a little late yesterday because I juuuust missed the train and figured I might as well read the paper and wait for the next one.) Still hittin' the snooze button a bit, but getting to sleep earlier and not waking up at three or four.

I think Sophie notices. heh. no, the Cesar Milan book I read he mentions quite often that dogs reflect our energy. So theoretically since I've been unbalanced she walked all over me, since I couldn't be a reliable leader. But she's finally not lunging after kitties so I'm feeling better about what happens if we don't find a new home for her. Don't completely trust her yet, but it's nice to know Albert can curl up on the back of the sofa and not be bothered. Now if we could just convince Carlos.

I've been up since 8 am! and never was sleepy during the day. Thought maybe I'd get up for an hour or so and go back to bed, but I didn't. But, RTO's expressed concerns that I may just be having a manic phase.... I'm still not feeling sleepy. Yesterday he was telling me I was a bit OCD about the wall paper.

Anyhoo, I'm noticing my brain is running a bit quicker than usual, but maybe this is "normal" and I just haven't seen it in so long it's starting to freak me out. I guess we'll find out in the days to come.

I'll probably share some of my recent experience with a local mental health hospital.

First, a short, um, recap.

Last Wednesday, I was feeling a bit worse and left work early cause I couldn't stop crying and on the way home figured that if I went home, that was going to be it. Didn't have a specific plan, but I'd picked up a steak knife at three in the morning and just barely scratched the top of my arm a couple times. still, that's more than I'd ever done before.

Anyhoo, went to the ER, explained the situation to them and they kept me there for a while, ran some tests, and then waited for a counselor/consultant. She strongly recommended that I stay in a hospital over night at the least and then get myself into the partial hospitalization plan. (basically, I go there during the day for group counseling and I can see a doctor more often).

So, I went there, and it stressed the heck out of me. I didn't sleep that night and made everyone's life difficult the next day, because I was under the impression I could leave. The staff there, however, had other ideas. so, after much crying and yelling and getting stupid forms signed (thank God that RTO was working on figuring out what I needed to do), I left at about five o'clock.

So now I go to some other building from 9 to 3 weekdays. and they generally plan for five to seven days,because it's more about getting people stabilized than fully treated but a few of the people in my group have been there a couple weeks.

it's only been two days so far, but I think this may actually work.

next will probably be my rant about stupid things to say to depressed people.

RTO: yep

MK: how much is it?

RTO: $9.99 for 12 oz.

MK: whoa

RTO: right, that's like twice as much as what we're currently drinking.

MK: well, is it civet poop coffee?

RTO: no.

MK: do the devil dogs poop it out?

RTO: I'm not talking to you any more.

MK: *continues giggling uncontrollably*

..and have decided to find Sophie a new home. She's a Flat Coat Retriever mix about 45 lbs. Healthy, good personality so long as you are not a cat or a squirrel or a bird, especially water fowl. apparently thunderstorms and public transportation do not mix well. Dunno. choo-choo was a bit late to the station and then it stopped a couple times in the middle of nowhere. whee! waiting at the station/train trip to Garland took almost half the trip time. On the plus side, I got the latest issue of Classical Singer read and finished Japanese Fairy Tales. (on my phone, I'm using Stanza. This is the first book I've read on it and it's pretty easy to use, but I don't think I'd read anything lengthy on it, just because.)

UPDATE: I guess they had a good reason.... lightning strike.

I used DART to get to work today and didn't get hopelessly lost. It took some finagling of the maps and schedules (ie: I know there's a stop right by the office, but not every route that DART gave me with their trip planner dropped me there. The "quickest" one stopped a half mile away.) So I picked a route that took a little bit longer than the quickest way, but was easiest to follow and didn't take me on a tour of downtown Dallas. Anyhoo, it probably took me longer than if I had left earlier (waited about 20 minutes for a connection that could have been shorter if I timed it better). But it's not much more time that it takes me by car and I got some reading done. So I'll probably stick with it.

oh, so the DMN runs a story about acclimating to the heat today...

Carlos just came into the bedroom of his own free will and sat in the window for a while then left by walking right past Sophie in her crate.

This is the same cat that maybe an hour earlier had hissed and hissed when I carried him from the bathroom to the bed so I could pet him. He does not like Sophie at all, and I can't really blame him. and whenever I bring him to bed he high tails it out as soon as he can and always hisses at Sophie on the way out. but not tonight.

Finally got around to watching this (it aired in May on PBS) mostly just kept reminding myself that, yes, this was the same lady that sang in Cenerentola last season. I mean, she can act and sing and dance and I hope to see more of her in the future. Was fine with the rest of the cast though not some of my faves. As long and as well known as the show is, I don't really have anything intelligent to add.

Loved the revolving set, but was going "Huh?" at the end when Don Jose and Carmen rotate off and Escamillo and the crowd rotate in, frozen in a pose, with a dead bull. um. okay. I get that that's what was going on inside all that time, but... was that supposed to mean something? Also was kind of amused that the cigarette factory seemed to be underground, all the women came up out of a big hole in the middle of the stage.
