We've tried all we can...

..and have decided to find Sophie a new home. She's a Flat Coat Retriever mix about 45 lbs. Healthy, good personality so long as you are not a cat or a squirrel or a bird, especially water fowl. Also, she's about two years old and has been with us since we got her at the Rowlett Animal Shelter in January. Feel free to contact me with questions. my email is gwynnifer at gmail dot com.
I know there's squirrels up there...

so two hours later I made it home...

apparently thunderstorms and public transportation do not mix well. Dunno. choo-choo was a bit late to the station and then it stopped a couple times in the middle of nowhere. whee! waiting at the station/train trip to Garland took almost half the trip time. On the plus side, I got the latest issue of Classical Singer read and finished Japanese Fairy Tales. (on my phone, I'm using Stanza. This is the first book I've read on it and it's pretty easy to use, but I don't think I'd read anything lengthy on it, just because.)

UPDATE: I guess they had a good reason.... lightning strike.

learning experience...

I used DART to get to work today and didn't get hopelessly lost. It took some finagling of the maps and schedules (ie: I know there's a stop right by the office, but not every route that DART gave me with their trip planner dropped me there. The "quickest" one stopped a half mile away.) So I picked a route that took a little bit longer than the quickest way, but was easiest to follow and didn't take me on a tour of downtown Dallas. Anyhoo, it probably took me longer than if I had left earlier (waited about 20 minutes for a connection that could have been shorter if I timed it better). But it's not much more time that it takes me by car and I got some reading done. So I'll probably stick with it.

kinda overdid it last night walking the dogs. I blame RTO. Cause I did okay over the weekend, but I also didn't walk quite as far.

Progress!

or sign of the apocalypse.. you decide.

Carlos just came into the bedroom of his own free will and sat in the window for a while then left by walking right past Sophie in her crate.

This is the same cat that maybe an hour earlier had hissed and hissed when I carried him from the bathroom to the bed so I could pet him. He does not like Sophie at all, and I can't really blame him. and whenever I bring him to bed he high tails it out as soon as he can and always hisses at Sophie on the way out. but not tonight.

Carmen!

Finally got around to watching this (it aired in May on PBS) mostly just kept reminding myself that, yes, this was the same lady that sang in Cenerentola last season. I mean, she can act and sing and dance and I hope to see more of her in the future. Was fine with the rest of the cast though not some of my faves. As long and as well known as the show is, I don't really have anything intelligent to add.

Loved the revolving set, but was going "Huh?" at the end when Don Jose and Carmen rotate off and Escamillo and the crowd rotate in, frozen in a pose, with a dead bull. um. okay. I get that that's what was going on inside all that time, but... was that supposed to mean something? Also was kind of amused that the cigarette factory seemed to be underground, all the women came up out of a big hole in the middle of the stage.

so, here's a clip of the opening of act II, watch around 3:30 mark for the part where she's singing while they carry her around on her back over their heads.

Trying not to get too attached...

going to pick up this little guy tomorrow. However, I told RTO I don't want to name him till he gets a clean bill of health. We've had a bad experience with that before.

so I've been to Illinois and back...

RTO had a cousin that got married and since everyone was there they decided to celebrate his grandmother's 90th birthday (which I found out later isn't til November... um... okay, talk about tempting fate)

and then RTO spent most of the reception arguing debating with his uncle. Not sure who was the brilliant person who seated them at the same table.

We stayed at a bed and breakfast and managed to not drive anywhere Saturday, just walked everywhere. I found some dollar records at this one second hand store. oh and RTO got a haircut and said it was a real barbershop because he came out smelling funny.

We also read A Thousand Splendid Suns. I haven't decided if I liked it or not. It was kind of a beating. (pun intended) Mostly because it dragged at the beginning (fifty pages in and I didn't really care about Mariam) and the end (even more years later? really!?) OTOH, it's kind of nice that Hosseini makes a point of tying up all loose ends, now if he could only do it in less than one hundred pages (I exaggerate, it only seemed like 100 pages) sooooo, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as engrossing as The Kite Runner.

The dogs made it through being boarded though we were a bit doubtful after we got two phone calls the first day. (One was to let us know they were being moved out of the suite because they started mauling the baseboards. and the second was to let us know Sophie has hookworms (still? again? who knows) but yesterday they came home happy and clean. Carlos stayed at home and a neighbor came to feed him a couple days, and he seems a bit more needy since we got back.

getting back to normal/work has been kinda difficult. at least now I'm on the downhill side of the week.
